When I was a little girl, my grandfather taught me something I still carry today:

“Sonya, be tough. Be strong. Be about your money. Be about your business.”

He taught me independence. He understood the strong side of me, the tomboy side, the side that never wanted to be weak or helpless.

To every woman and every young girl who has ever been told to shrink herself to be loved: don’t. Do not downplay your intelligence. Do not hide your ambition. Do not silence your voice. Do not make yourself smaller so somebody else can feel bigger.

I am a woman of faith. I am a wife. I am a mother. I am a business owner. I am an artist. I am a writer. I am still growing, still learning, and still stepping fully into myself.

Love should not require you to lose yourself. Respect should be mutual. Growth should be mutual. Support should be mutual.

Be smart. Be bold. Be graceful. Be about your business. Be about your purpose. Be everything God created you to be.

Never give up on your dreams, despite who tries to tell you you can’t do this and that. Keep dreaming. Put God first, and remember, you are beautiful.
